About three weeks ago, I bought the Inspiral Carpets’ Cool As 2CD and DVD compilation, but only last week did I get around to watching the DVD. Only last week did I realise I’d never seen a single Carpets promo video before. Not one! It’s like I’ve opened up a whole new world of hero-worship that I never realised was there.
The one thing that strikes me — and saddens me — most about the videos is that they never really had the budget to do justice to the songs. Only Uniform, their swansong, got the kind of reflective, thoughtful visual accompaniment so richly deserved. For a band to be this successful (four critically acclaimed hit albums, remember) and yet go so apparently unrecognised is a travesty. For songs so full of rich stories to be promoted with unimaginative band-in-studio videos is a great shame and an opportunity missed.
Anyway, never mind that, just go out and buy the thing — it’s only £12.99 at cd-wow.com.
