When is a race not a race?

When it’s got fewer cars taking part than there are points-scoring positions, perhaps?

Schumacher wins US GP; F1 loses [motorsport.com]
Well, what a ridiculous affair that was. What’s more ridiculous is that I even watched it all. For a long time, the motorsport world has scoffed at the United States for being somewhat insular and failing to produce world-class drivers. After such a pathetic display at Indianapolis, however, I wouldn’t begrudge the average American for looking down their noses at us.

It was very surreal indeed. You couldn't blame most people for thinking that the sport is run by a bunch of amateurs. I thought Ferrari could have been a bit more compromising though. Their objection to adding a chicane didn't help matters.

On the other hand Ferrari had managed to get themselves sorted out so they could compete at the circuit as it was. If the other teams couldn't be competitive that's their problem - it's not Ferrari's fault that there wasn't a harder (and slower...?) Michelin available.
Would you blame McLaren for objecting if the other teams wanted to shorten the straight at Hockenheim because their top speed wasn't high enough?
Put another way - there was nothing MAKING the other cars go so fast - if it was truly a matter of safety they could have slowed down without needing to add a chicane. But then they wouldn't have been competitive, so instead they chose not to run.
I can blame Michelin for not making an appropriate tyre available; I can blame the circuit owners for doing strange thing to the track to suit NASCAR; I can blame the Michelin teams for being some damn pathetic - but I can't blame Ferrari or the FIA... < /rant> ;-)
